Mary Ellen Hegarty is a Jersey-born, Liverpool-based artist whose work explores colour, character and the drama of everyday indulgence.
Mary's creative journey began with preserving real flowers and orchids in resin to create wearable art and jewellery. This curiosity eventually led her to oil painting, where she found a medium that offered greater freedom.
Her first dog portrait was of her own dog, Billy, a beautiful Lhasa Apso who passed away. She had so much fun painting him that she kept going, and has since become somewhat obsessed with chihuahuas. Alongside this, she continues a quieter, ongoing practice in moody botanical abstraction.
Mary believes art is meant to be fun, creative and a little silly, a way to bring a smile to everyday life, not something to take too seriously.
